I remember when credit and debit cards only had magnetic strips, not the electronic chips as well. Spending technology has changed rapidly and will continue to evolve as time goes by. The advancements have increased our opportunity to spend money in different ways but so have the ways of stealing card credentials.

One such way to steal card information is through what is called a card skimmer. Card skimmers are placed on card machines in public places such as gas pumps or ATMs. This technique requires a surreptitious device to be installed in such a way as to allow an individual's card to be used without the person's knowledge. Once used, the card's data is stored in the device until retrieved by the installer.

Another way for your card information to be stolen is through another technique called skimming. Most, if not all, new cards are designed with a tiny loop of wire connected to an integrated circuit. This device allows for the use of Near Field Communication (NFC). Using your card at a point of sale in this manner is very quick and easy but it brings about another set of security issues. Criminals that use a device roughly the size of a deck of cards can obtain your card's information by simply having the devices within inches of your card. It can happen when you least expect it and in areas where you feel safe and secure.

Although most major card companies don't hold you responsible, you will need to go through multiple steps to keep your name disassociated with fraud complaints, issuance of new cards, payment account changes, and other problems associated with the theft of your financial information.

Security is a mindset that goes beyond locks and alarms. As technology continues to expand, keep in mind the information you are putting out there and learn how to protect that information. There are multiple ways to protect yourself in today's advancing world, contact Broadhead Security Solutions, LLC to see how we can help you.
